Former RNC chairman Michael Steele called Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a “shitforbrains” Republican.
Steele was reacting to Greene’s call for the FBI to be defunded in response to the raid on Trump’s Florida home.
“For once try to be less stupid,” Steele said in a tweet directed at Greene.
Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, excoriated Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia for demanding that the FBI be defunded following its Monday raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
After Greene tweeted “DEFUND THE FBI!” in an apparent reaction to the news on Monday night, Steele responded in a quote tweet that, “Trump failed to return classified docs requested by the National Archives. A federal judge issued a search warrant for probable cause of a crime. This is not some rando move by the FBI so you shitforbrains Republicans calling for ‘defunding the FBI’ for once try to be less stupid.”
Greene, one of the most bombastic and controversial figures in Congress, has repeatedly condemned the Black Lives Matter movement for criticizing law enforcement and calling for police to be defunded.
Reacting to the former RNC chairman’s tweet in a comment to Insider, Greene spokesperson Nick Dyer said, “Who the hell is Michael Steele?”
Other Trump allies in the GOP, such as Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, have similarly called for the FBI to be defunded in response to the FBI search. A number of Republicans have made comparisons between the US government and Nazi Germany or other dictatorships as they’ve reacted to the raid.
The FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago reportedly pertained to an investigation into 15 boxes of documents — including classified material — that Trump took with him from the White House to his Florida resort when he left office.
In response to Republicans claiming the search represents an abuse of power by the Department of Justice or the politicization of law enforcement, some Democratic lawmakers have noted that FBI director Christopher Wray was appointed by Trump. After nominating Wray to lead the FBI, Trump in 2017 praised him as “a man of impeccable credentials.”
